pacificpocker.com – When we talk about a ‘calling station’ the term basically means a player who always wants to call and see what you have, rather than be cautious and fold their hand. This sort of player is obviously very damaging to players who like to make tester bets and bluff at pots, and if you are that type of players, as I am, you need to have these players on your radar. When a new player turns up for our local game, I will never bluff at a pot when involved in a hand with them, until I know what their reaction is likely to be.
When you get extremely inexperienced players at a table, you are likely to find a lot of them are calling stations, but that’s not to say that those players who like to find out if they are truly beaten are all amateurs. In the modern game there are many players who like to get aggressive and bluff, and calling stations can cause them many problems. In some cases you will call a player down and find you have them beat, but for the most part, this style of play isn’t really for me.
I think calling stations have great potential to frustrate particular player types, and can be profitable if that player cannot change their style to combat your play. The problem is that as soon as a serial bluffer gets their fingers burnt trying to steal a pot from a calling station, they are likely to adapt their play. The clearest weakness of a calling station type of player, is that when someone makes a hand, they will keep building that pot, knowing they’ll get called down.
