In some games I would have to say that I prefer playing ‘Pot Limit’ poker. Omaha hi/lo for instance, is a game where I find there are many instances when I like to see a flop to get a feel for the direction my hand is going to take. Limit poker of course serves this function well too, but the difference is that with pot Limit play, you get the chance to put in a reasonable sized raise if you feel you need to.
Although my particular Pot limit game of preference is Omaha, the Pot Limit game has it’s place within Holdem too. Many tournaments are held in this format, and it still allows for sizeable betting, whilst keeping a level of control on the earlier raises in the hand. There is one problem I find with this type of play in Holdem games though. In Holdem I feel there are many instances where you need to put in a strong raise preflop to protect your hand. This is essential to the game, and if you are in early position especially, you will not be able to make a sufficient raise to protect a strong hand.
For the most part, you could probably say that many Pot Limit games are looser, because people feel safer getting involved and seeing a flop, and I particularly like this in some types of game. When it comes to Holdem however, I just feel it restricts key aspects of the game a little too much to be beneficial.
